الإنترنت ومصادر المعلومات الإلكترونية الأخرى أصبحت الآن تستخدم على نطاق واسع في البحوث و الدراسات العلمية، لذلك أصبح من الضروري الاعتماد على مراجع معيارية لتوثيق هذه المصادر في سياق النص وعلى شكل قوائم ببليوغرافية في نهاية البحث•
لقد تعددت المعايير المتبعة في توثيق هذه المصادر فالبعض منها متخصص بالعلوم الإنسانية و البعض الآخر بالعلوم الطبيعية و التطبيقية•
ومن أكثر المعايير انتشاراً هي :
  • Modern Language Association Style (MLA Style)
  • American Psychological Association (APA Style)


وقد افردت منظمة الايزو معيارا خاصا بالتوثيق هو ISO 690
وذلك لوضع معايير مقننة لتوثيق المصادر الالكترونية عند كتابة الابحاث ، بالاضافة الي التوحيد القياسي علي مستوي العالم ، لذا اصبح من الاهمية بمكان ان يتعلم الباحث او طالب الدراسات العليا طريقة التوثيق القياسي للمصادر الالكترونية
